Ambassador Sianga Abílio said on 20 November 2023, in Nairobi, that overcoming the three global environmental challenges, namely climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, requires UN Member States and partner organisations to take concerted action to implement sustainable practices aimed at protecting natural resources.
Ambassador Sianga Abílio's statements were made during the opening session of the 10th Annual Meeting of the Subcommittee of the Committee of Permanent Representatives to the United Nations Environment Programme, which took place at the United Nations complex in Nairobi from 20 to 24 November 2023.
At this environmental diplomacy meeting, delegations from United Nations Member States and partner organisations assessed the state of implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme's 2022-2023 work programme and budget; learned about preparations for COP 28 and the sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly; and discussed future prospects for environmental multilateralism.
Throughout the week, delegates to the 10th Annual Meeting of the Subcommittee of the Committee of Permanent Representatives addressed issues linked to UNEP's three medium-term strategies, namely Climate Stability, Living in Harmony with Nature and Towards a Pollution-Free Planet, covering sub-themes such as adaptation, resilience, decarbonisation, pollution and health.
