The Minister of the Environment Ana Paula de Carvalho, and the Secretary of State for External Relations Esmeralda Mendonça, arrived in Nairobi in the early hours of 02 September 2023, to join the delegation of the Republic of Angola that attended the first African Climate Summit from 4 to 6 September.
At Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, the Minister of the Environment Ana Paula de Carvalho, and the Secretary of State Esmeralda Mendonça, were greeted by engineer Sianga Abílio, Angola's Ambassador to Kenya and Permanent Representative of Angola to the United Nations Offices in Nairobi.
The African Climate Summit, which took place under the slogan "Boosting Green Growth and Climate Finance Solutions for Africa and the World", had two segments, the ministerial one on 4 September and the presidential one on 5 and 6 September, where, among others, were debated topics such as Climate, Peace, Security and Mobility; Investment Pacts for Adaptation; Expansion of high-impact climate finance in Africa; Investment in Nature and Biodiversity; Creating the conditions: The Global Climate Agenda and; Renewable Energy and Transitions.
The event served as a platform for Africa to consolidate its voice on climate change and sustainable development and mobilise support for the implementation of continental programmes and policies, such as the African Union Strategy and Action Plan on Climate Change and Resilient Development.
The African Climate Summit adopted a Nairobi Declaration by African Leaders on Green Growth and Climate Financing Solutions, a document that brought together the African position for COP-28, the United Nations Conference of the Parties on Climate Change, scheduled for the end of November in Dubai.
