Ambassador Sianga Abílio represented the Republic of Angola at the 35th Meeting of the Technical Support Committee of the Regional Oversight Mechanism of the Framework Agreement for Peace, Security and Cooperation for the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Great Lakes Region, held in Nairobi on 01st and 02nd February 2024.
The meeting, which was jointly organised by the Office of the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Great Lakes Region and the African Union, was attended by delegations from the signatory countries of the Framework Agreement, namely Angola, Burundi, Congo Brazzaville, DRC, Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda, as well as representatives of organisations that provide support for the implementation of the Framework Agreement, such as the United Nations, the African Union, the ICGLR, SADC and MONUSCO, the UN Stabilisation Mission for the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The agenda of the 35th Meeting of the Technical Support Committee included topics such as assessing the evolution of the situation in the region since May 2023, when the last meeting of the Technical Group was held in Bujumbura, and defining proposals for revitalising the Framework Agreement for Peace, Security and Cooperation for the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Great Lakes Region, in order to make its implementation more effective in the search for peace for the east of the DRC and the Great Lakes Region in general.
The 35th Technical Support Committee meeting also looked at the preparatory process for the next summit of the Regional Oversight Mechanism of the Framework Agreement for Peace, Security and Cooperation for the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Great Lakes Region, which will take place in Uganda on a date to be announced.
In his speech, Ambassador Sianga Abílio summarised the actions carried out in the last six months by the Republic of Angola and highlighted the role played by His Excellency João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, President of the Republic of Angola, as Champion of the African Union for Peace and Reconciliation in Africa, within the framework of efforts to find peace in the eastern DRC and to bring the leaderships of the DRC and Rwanda closer together.
Ambassador Sianga Abílio reiterated the willingness of the Republic of Angola to continue to prioritise its active participation in the efforts to pacify the eastern DRC, as he considered this to be an important issue for the country.
