The Republic of Angola participated on December 4, 2020, in the 8th special session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) under the theme: “Improving environmental action for an effective post-COVID recovery in Africa”.
The meeting, which took place in videoconference format from Nairobi was organized by the United Nations Environment Program - UNEP and aimed to provide African Ministers of Environment with a platform for consultation around the main issues foreseen for the 5th Environment Assembly of United Nations - UNEA5, scheduled for February 2021.
The Ambassador Sianga Abílio, Permanent Representative of Angola to the UN Offices in Nairobi said on the matter that African countries plan to agree on a common approach to Africa through a Ministerial Declaration at the fifth United Nations Environment Assembly, a world event that will have the mission of consolidating environmental actions within the context of sustainable development.
The 8th special session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment also provided an opportunity for the continent to find a common basis for the 15th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity to be held in 2021.
On the other hand, African Environment Ministers received information from the African Negotiating Group on Climate Change on the preparations and key negotiating issues for the 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to be held at the end of 2021.
At the session, a post-COVID-19 Recovery Plan proposal was presented based on a Green Stimulus Recovery Program for Africa.
