An Angolan parliamentary delegation led by Ms. Suzana Augusta de Melo, 2nd Vice President of the National Assembly participated from 02 to 06 April 2022 in Nairobi, in the 12th Ordinary Session of the Plenary Assembly of the Parliamentary Forum of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (FP-CIRGL).

On 02 and 03 April 2022, the parliamentarians attended parallel meetings of specific committees as were the cases of the Joint Statutory Meeting of the Committee on Women, Children and Vulnerable Persons; the meeting of the Committee on Social and Humanitarian issues and on 04 April 2022, the Conference of the Presidents of the Parliaments of the Member States of the ICGLR Parliamentary Forum took place, with one of the themes being the Role of Parliaments in the Resolution of Conflicts in the Great Lakes Region, while 05 and 06 April 2022 were reserved for Plenary Assembly sessions.

The 12th Ordinary Session of the Plenary Assembly of the Parliamentary Forum of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (FP-CIRGL) ended with the adoption of Resolutions on the Political, Security and Humanitarian Situation in the Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan and Sudan, countries with a still worrying political framework.

For five days the Parliamentarians of the Great Lakes Region focused mainly on the Role of Parliaments in Conflict Resolution and adopted a Resolution on the subject and a Nairobi Declaration which highlights the progress in the normalisation of bilateral relations between some Member States of the ICGLR and the diffusion of tensions such as the reopening of the Gatuna-Katuna land border between Rwanda and Uganda and the bilateral efforts underway for the normalisation of relations between Burundi and Rwanda.

The Parliamentary Forum of the ICGLR was informed by the Executive Secretary of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, the Angolan diplomat João Samuel Caholo on the current state of the political, security and humanitarian situation in the Great Lakes Region, characterized as worrying given the continued prevalence of armed violence in some Member States with the action of negative forces and terrorist groups.

The Parliamentarians also approved the Action Plan, Budget for 2022-2023 and the Strategic Plan for 2022-2026 of the Parliamentary Forum of the ICGLR.

On the sidelines of the working sessions the Head of the Angolan delegation, MP Suzana Augusto de Melo exchanged views with the Executive Secretary of the ICGLR Joao Samuel Caholo on the situation in the Great Lakes Region.

The Angolan parliamentary delegation headed by the 2nd Vice President of the National Assembly, Suzana Augusta de Melo, was made up of the following Members of Parliament: Sérgio Leonardo Vaz, Agostinho dos Santos Van-Dúnem, Maria Isabel Malunga Mutunda, Celso Torres Capingala, and the parliamentary staff, Isaura Tchissola Mateus Vicente and Lázaro Valentim Vaz Vicente.

The Parliamentary Forum of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (FP-CIRGL) is an inter-parliamentary organisation that brings together national parliaments of the 12 member states of the ICGLR, namely the Republic of Angola, Republic of Burundi, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Kenya, Republic of Rwanda, Republic of South Sudan, Republic of Sudan, Republic of Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania and Republic of Zambia.
