The Speaker of the National Assembly Dr. Carolina Cerqueira said on 30 March 2023, in Juba, that the Angolan Parliament is fully willing to cooperate with the Legislative Assembly of South Sudan (Parliament) with a view to share the experience of Angola in a process of consolidation of peace and national reconciliation, encompassing the question of the formation of a unified National Army.
Dr. Carolina Cerqueira was speaking during a meeting with her South Sudanese counterpart Jemma Kumba on the sidelines of the 13th Ordinary Session of the Plenary Assembly of the Forum of Parliaments of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (FP-CIRGL) which was held from 27 March to 01 April, 2023, in the capital of the Republic of South Sudan and attended by the parliamentary leaders and parliamentarians from the Great Lakes region.
Upon its arrival in Juba on the morning of March 30, 2023, the Angolan parliamentary delegation led by the Speaker of the National Assembly Dr. Carolina Cerqueira was received by the First Vice Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of South Sudan Oyet Pierino, by the Angolan Ambassador to South Sudan with residence in Nairobi, Engineer Sianga Abílio and by the Member of Parliament Pedro Sebastião, who led the Angolan technical delegation of the National Assembly.
Addressing the local press the leader of the Angolan Parliament highlighted the role of the President of the Republic of Angola His Excellency João Manuel Gonçalves in the process of seeking peace for the east of the DRC and the Great Lakes region highlighting the recent approval by the Angolan Parliament of a resolution approving the sending of a contingent of 500 soldiers, including 125 ladies, from the Angolan Armed Forces to the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo to secure the cantonment areas for the M23 members and to protect the members of the Ad-Hoc Verification Mechanism.
The first part of the 13th Ordinary Session of the Plenary Assembly of the Forum of the Parliaments of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (FP-CIRGL), held under the theme: Parliamentary Diplomacy for Conflict Resolution in the Great Lakes Region, included a number of meetings of the Technical Committees, a session of the Executive Committee, being reserved for March 30, the conference of the Presidents of Parliaments and on March 31 and April 1st, the Thirteenth Plenary Assembly.
