The Angolan Permanent Representative to the UN Offices, Ambassador Sianga Abílio, participated in the 147th meeting of the Permanent Representatives Committee, held in Nairobi, on 11 of October, 2019.
The meeting considered and adopted the United Nations Environment Program Report of July-September 2019, which addresses the worldwide development of environmental issues, presented by UNEP Executive Director Ms. Inger Anderson.
The members of the Permanent Representatives Committee highlighted preparations for the commemoration in 2022 of the 50th anniversary of the UN Environment Program - UNEP and underlined the importance of the commemorative events being shared among Sweden, the location of the decision-making for the establishment of UNEP in 1972 and Kenya, where the headquarters of this United Nations body operates.
The Committee has also adopted a statement by the SADC countries which, on the one hand, calls for the lifting of international sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe and, on the other hand, makes Swahili one of the working languages of this sub regional organization, as decided by the Heads of State at the recent summit held in Dar es Salaam.
On the sidelines of the 147th meeting of the Permanent Representatives Committee to the UN Offices in Nairobi, Ambassador Sianga Abilio congratulated the Ethiopian delegation on the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed.
The Permanent Representatives Committee to the UN Offices is the body that prepares UNEP Assembly meetings and regularly monitors the implementation of UNEP decisions.
