The Member of the National Assembly, Djamila de Almeida, was part of a group of parliamentarians from the Parliamentary Forum of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), who paid a fact-finding visit to the Nakivale refugee camp in southern Uganda, near the border with Tanzania, on 4 August 2023.

During their visit to the camp, the members of the ICGLR Parliamentary Forum learnt about the conditions in which the approximately 178,000 refugees, mostly from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), are living, after holding a meeting with officials from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), who are responsible for managing the camp.

The Nakivale refugee camp was set up in 1958 and is the 8th largest refugee camp in the world, housing mainly refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Somalia, Rwanda, Ethiopia and Eritrea.

In addition to this fact-finding visit to the Nakivale refugee camp, MP Djamila de Almeida, who is the Rapporteur of the Committee on Gender, Children and Vulnerable People in the ICGLR Parliamentary Forum, was in Uganda to attend the 7th Joint Statutory Meeting of the Committee on Gender, Children and Vulnerable People and the Committee on Humanitarian and Social Issues in Kampala on 7th and 8th August 2023, which was dominated by two main themes, namely Child Marriage in the Great Lakes Region and the Challenges of Refugees and Displaced Persons.
