Ambassador Sianga Abílio said, on 15th December 2023 in Nairobi, that 2023 was one of the most dynamic years in terms of the work of the Diplomatic Mission he heads.
Ambassador Sianga Abílio made this assessment during the end-of-year greetings event held at the Diplomatic Mission's premises and attended by the staff of the Angolan Embassy in the Republic of Kenya, a mission that extends its diplomatic coverage to the Republic of Uganda, the Republic of South Sudan and the Federal Republic of Somalia.
In his speech Ambassador Sianga Abílio recalled that throughout 2023, in addition to routine activities, the Diplomatic Mission was actively involved in important events and the highlight of which was the State Visit that His Excellency João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço made to the Republic of Kenya from 19th to 21st October 2023, which culminated in the signing of 11 Memorandums of Understanding aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two countries.
The Angolan Ambassador to Kenya recalled that the historic State Visit, as it was the first by an Angolan Head of State to Kenya, was preceded by the first session of the Joint Bilateral Commission for Angola-Kenya Cooperation, an event that was also important for marking the process of bilateral cooperation.
Throughout 2023, Ambassador Sianga Abílio pointed out, the Diplomatic Mission took part in other important activities such as the trip of Dr Carolina Cerqueira, President of the National Assembly to Juba for the Meeting of the Speakers of Parliaments of the ICGLR Parliamentary Forum; the visit of Pope Francis to South Sudan; the 2nd Session of the UN-HABITAT Assembly where Angola saw its mandate on the UN-HABITAT Executive Board extended for another two years; the trip to Nairobi of Dr Esperança da Costa, Vice-President of the Republic, to attend the first African Climate Summit; the third Session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee for the creation of an international law against plastic pollution; and most recently, the Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP-28) held in Dubai.
Ambassador Sianga Abílio recognised that the positive results of the Diplomatic Mission's exercise were the result of the good performance and team spirit of the staff, both diplomats and locals, and called for the same dedication to work to be maintained in 2024, with a focus on monitoring the implementation of the Agreements recently signed with Kenya and leading the SADC Group in Nairobi, as well as providing bilateral diplomatic duties in Kenya, Uganda, Somalia and South Sudan, and multilateral duties with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT).
