The city of Kampala, the capital of Uganda, witnessed on the evening of 20th January 2024, the closing ceremony of the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement, an event that took place under the slogan "Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Influence" and which brought together delegations from 120 countries and international organisations.
For two days heads of state and government and their representatives analysed the situation of the Non-Aligned Movement based on the main pillars of its foundation and the current global context.
Ambassador Téte António, Minister of External Relations, represented the President of the Republic João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, at this Non-Aligned Movement summit.
The 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement was marked by the admission of South Sudan as the newest member state, bringing the organisation to a total of 121 countries, in addition to 18 states as observers.
The Heads of State and Government adopted a Final Document with three chapters dealing with Global Issues through an analysis of the international situation; Regional and Sub-Regional Political Issues which, in relation to Africa, highlights the situation in Somalia and the Great Lakes Region; and Development, Social and Human Rights Issues, which emphasise the financial and economic challenges caused by the current multiple and interconnected crises.
The 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement adopted the Kampala Declaration, which reaffirms the Movement's will and commitment to the defence of the principles of sovereignty and sovereign equality of States, territorial integrity, mutual respect, non-intervention and non-interference in the internal affairs of other States, and the peaceful resolution of disputes, and calls on states to refrain from any acts of violation of the sovereignty of other States.
The Heads of State and Government also adopted a Political Declaration of the Non-Aligned Movement on Palestine situation.
The closing session of the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement saw the intervention of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who recognised the important role of the Non-Aligned Movement in the context of the United Nations, since its Member States have been very active in processes involving peacekeeping forces and champions of global solidarity actions, as was the case during the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the summit, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, President of the Republic of Uganda, took over the Chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement for a three-year term.
On the sidelines of the working sessions of the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement, a Trade Fair, an Investment Forum for East Africa and an event on Intelligent Partnership were held.
