The Minister of the Environment Ana Paula Chantre Luna de Carvalho Pereira said, on 29th February 2024, in Nairobi, that the Republic of Angola is making efforts at all levels to implement solutions that preserve nature for current and future generations.
The Minister of the Environment made that statement while speaking at the High-Level Segment of the Sixth United Nations Environment Assembly, a session which at its opening was attended and addressed by the Heads of State of Kenya, Willian Samoei Ruto, Botswana, Mokgweetsi Masisi, Djibouti, Ismaïl Omar Guellé, Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the leader of Gabon's transitional government, Brice Nguema, as well as the Vice-Presidents of Libya, Zimbabwe and the Prime Ministers of Burundi, Ethiopia, Eswatini and Rwanda.
The President of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly Dennis Francis and the Director-General of the WHO, Tedros Ghebreyesus, also addressed the session while the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, spoke via videoconference.
In her speech, Minister Ana Paula Chantre Luna de Carvalho spoke about the National Climate Change Strategy approved by the Angolan government, which identifies actions aimed at adapting the national territory to the effects of climate change and adopting a low-carbon model.
As for biodiversity, the Environment Minister told the plenary that Angola is fully committed to the conservation and protection of flora and fauna, both inside and outside conservation areas, a commitment that also extends to the integration and empowerment of communities.
The head of the Angolan delegation to the Sixth United Nations Environment Assembly took the opportunity to announce, on the one hand, that the Angolan authorities are working to create the first marine conservation area and, on the other, that the Angolan government has set up a multidisciplinary group that is working on drawing up the National Plan for the Gradual Banning of Plastics.
The High-Level Segment ran until 1st March 2024 with three Leadership Dialogues around the central theme of the Sixth United Nations Environment Assembly, namely "Effective, Inclusive and Sustainable Multilateral Actions to Tackle Climate Change, Biodiversity Loss and Pollution".
The Angolan delegation includes Engineer Sianga Abílio, Ambassador of the Republic of Angola to Kenya and Permanent Representative of Angola to the UN Offices in Nairobi, the Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of the National Waste Agency Nelma Carvalho, and senior officials from the Office of the Vice-President of the Republic, the Ministries of the Environment and External Relations and the Angolan Diplomatic Mission in Nairobi.
