The Minister of the Environment Ana Paula Chantre Luna de Carvalho Pereira, held, on 1st March 2024, a working meeting in Nairobi with the Kenyan Minister for Tourism and Wildlife Alfred Mutua, to discuss issues related to bilateral cooperation in the field of wildlife.
At the meeting, which was attended by Ambassador Sianga Abílio, the Environment Minister said that the sector she heads is interested in implementing the Memorandum of Understanding signed in October 2023 in Nairobi during the State Visit of His Excellency João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, President of the Republic of Angola.
In concrete terms, according to the minister, Angola has identified three areas in which it intends to exchange experiences with Kenya, namely the management of human-animal conflict; the exchange of animal species and; the sharing of information in relation to conservation areas.
In the meantime, according to the Minister for the Environment, there is a need for the two ministries to set up working teams with the mission of starting the process of implementing the Memorandum of Understanding in the field of Wildlife, a step that Angola has already taken by forming its working team.
The Kenyan Minister for Tourism and Wildlife Alfred Mutua agreed with Angola's proposal and future actions were scheduled to create the conditions for the start of the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding, whose priority for Angola is athe need to learn about Kenya's experience in training rangers in new techniques to combat poaching and in the process of managing human-animal conflict.
The working meeting between the Minister of the Environment Ana Paula Chantre Lunda de Carvalho Pereira and the Kenyan Minister for Tourism and Wildlife Alfred Mutua, took place on the sidelines of the sessions on the last day of the Sixth United Nations Environment Assembly, a day marked by a meeting of African Environment Ministers and two Leadership Dialogues, the first on the role of the global financial system in effectively combating climate change, loss of nature and pollution and the second on the theme of environmental multilateralism as a beacon of hope.
