The Permanent Representative of Angola to the United Nations Offices in Nairobi Ambassador, Sianga Abílio, participated on April 30, 2020, through video conference in the 150th meeting of the Permanent Representatives Committee convened to analyze and define actions for the United Nations Environment Program - UNEP.
The meeting chaired by the Ambassador of Brazil, Fernando Coimbra, considered and adopted a document that contemplates a series of actions focusing on nature destined for the fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly, scheduled for February 2021 with the theme “Strengthening Actions for Nature with a View to Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals”.
The Permanent Representatives Committee took note of the intergovernmental panel on Climate Change sponsored by UNEP and the World Meteorological Organization, held on February 24, 2020, in Paris and the United Nations Environment Program announced at the time an increase of its contribution to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) trust fund.
The 137 members of the Permanent Representatives Committee who attended the meeting recommended the Member States to approve the UNEP medium-term strategy for the period of 2022-2025 during the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-5).
The Permanent Representative of Angola Ambassador, Sianga Abílio, stressed the importance of UNEP's promotion of the “Young Champions of the Earth” program, a platform that provides young people the opportunity to present their projects and contributions on environmental issues globally.
In this context the Ambassador, Sianga Abílio, took the opportunity to inform the Permanent Representatives Committee that the young Angolan, Adjany Costa, one of the winners of the 2019 “Young Champions of the Earth” contest was recently appointed by the President of the Republic of Angola, João Lourenço, to the post of Minister of Culture, Tourism and Environment.
