The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Angola to the UN in Nairobi, Ambassador Sianga Abílio, participated on July 29, 2020, in the Kenyan capital, by videoconference, in an Extraordinary Meeting of the Executive Board of UN-HABITAT convened to elect the President of the Executive Board of UN-Habitat to replace the United States of America that ended its term.
This meeting took place following the 2nd Meeting of the Executive Board of UN-HABITAT held on June 30, 2020, which was inconclusive because there was a deadlock in the election of the future President of the Executive Board of UN- Habitat due to the opposition expressed by the United States of America to the candidacy of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
In order to solve the deadlock, the 36 member countries of the UN-Habitat Executive Board, the Republic of Angola being part of the group, had agreed to carry out a voting process at the United Nations headquarters in Nairobi at the end of July.
Meanwhile the member countries of the Executive Board decided to abdicate the voting process because common sense prevailed based on the Executive Board regulations approved by the UN-Habitat Assembly in May 2019, according to which the next candidate for President would be a representative from the Asia and the Pacific region, in this case the Islamic Republic of Iran as a result of a multilateral negotiation and consultation that took place in the last three weeks.
In this perspective, the 36 member countries of the Executive Board decided by acclamation to elect the Islamic Republic of Iran to hold the annual Presidency of this important United Nations Human Settlement Body and all members of the Bureau.
The African Union was represented at the event by the Commissioner for Political Affairs the Ambassador Minata Samate Cessouma.
