The delegation of the Republic of Angola that participated in Nairobi on 12 and 13 April 2023, in the 33rd Meeting of the Technical Support Committee of the Regional Oversight Mechanism of the Framework Agreement for Peace, Security and Cooperation for the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Great Lakes Region reaffirmed Angola's commitment to deploy the contingent of Angolan Armed Forces to support peacekeeping operations, securing the M23 cantonment areas in the eastern DRC and protecting the members of the Ad-Hoc Verification Mechanism, which should take place as soon as the Congolese authorities confirm the existence of conditions for that purpose.
The information was given to the plenary of the 33rd Technical Meeting on April 12, by the Minister Counselor Jorge Cardoso of the Ministry of External Relations who heads the Angolan delegation, when he presented the report on the actions undertaken by His Excellency João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço President of the Republic of Angola and acting President of the ICGLR, from November 2022 to 12 April 2023, in the framework of the initiatives carried out in his capacity as mediator for the détente of political, diplomatic and security tensions between the DRC and Rwanda and for the pacification of the Great Lakes region in general.
At the meeting the participants, among various issues, reviewed the political and security situation in the Great Lakes region since the last meeting of the Technical Support Committee held in November 2022 in Nairobi; assessed the degree of implementation of the decisions of the 10th High Level Meeting (Summit) of the Regional Oversight Mechanism - ROM held in February 2022 in Kinshasa; addressed the preparatory status of the 11th High-Level Meeting (Summit) scheduled for May 2023 in Bujumbura, Republic of Burundi and; were briefed on the status of implementation of the Action Plan of the UN Strategy for Peace Consolidation, Conflict Prevention and Conflict Resolution in the Great Lakes Region.
The 33rd Meeting of the Technical Support Committee was co-chaired by Ambassadors Huang Xia Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Great Lakes Region and Sghair M'Barek High Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission for the Great Lakes Region and Head of the Liaison Offices in Burundi and in addition to delegations from the ICGLR member countries the meeting was attended by representatives of the ICGLR Secretariat, SADC and MONUSCO.
