The Ambassador, Mr. Sianga Abílio, paid a visit to the plantation field and tea factory of the Kenyan company, Ngorongo, on 12 of September, 2019.
This visit followed an invitation from the management of the Ngorongo Tea Factory, one of the kenyan companies that participated in the Angola-Kenya Business Forum, held in July 2019, in Luanda.
The Ambassador was welcomed by the company's Board of Directors composed of its Chairman, Mr. Sam Karume, the Managing Director Mr. George Omuga, and the Director, Mr. Charles Karanja.
At the meeting with the company Board, Ambassador Sianga Abílio reiterated the importance that the Angolan government attaches to the promotion of local production and suggested to the company Board to consider setting up a tea factory in Angola.
According to the Ambassador Angola has climatic conditions for tea production and a possible installation of a tea factory with the know-how of Kenya would not only represent a great opportunity for job creation, but would fit in the ongoing process of economic diversification.
Ngorongo tea factory officials expressed interest in investing in Angola in a process that would go through the following three steps:
First step - Export its products to the Angolan market for market prospecting;
Second stage - Installation of a tea factory and export to Angola of the raw material and;
Third stage - Opening of tea plantation fields in Angola.
The Ngorongo tea factory is a family business, founded in 1965 and has a capacity to produce a maximum of 25 tons of tea / day, with annual production of around 4000 to 5000 tons.
The company has a plantation area of 1,200 hectares, employs around 4,000 employees, it specializes in producing "Kenfresh tea" branded black CTC tea and 80% of its production is for export.
Kenya is the third largest tea producer in the world, after China and India, and exports to over fifty countries.
The country contributes 10% of total global tea production, which corresponds to 27% of world exports.
The tea industry employs about 10 million people directly and indirectly in Kenya.
